General Cigar has officially announced details around its newest offering in the Hoyo de Monterrey line, the Hoyo. The new Hoyo is geared exclusively for brick and mortar retailers and will ship to retailers beginning on April 1st.
The look of the new Hoyo might look familiar to fans of the Hoyo de Monterrey line. This is because the packaging and banding was inspired by a limited edition cigar released under the Hoyo de Monterrey line called Hoyo de Monterrey Edicion de Cumpleanos 150. That cigar was meant to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Hoyo de Monterrey brand. At the same time, General Cigar used the occasion to showcase a new contemporary look for the Hoyo de Monterrey brand. The blend featured a proprietary shade grown Habano wrapper from Esteli cultivated by the Plasencias that had never been used before as well as feature a new varietal of Nicaraguan tobacco.
The new Hoyo uses that same Esteli Shade grown wrapper as was used on the Edicion de Cumpleanos 150, but adds an extra two years of fermentation to provide deeper flavor. The remainder of the blend consists of an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder and a mix of Esteli, Ometepe, and Pennsylvania ligero leaves. The binder and filler were also subject to additional aging.
The new Hoyo will also be available in four sizes, each packaged in 20 count boxes. Pricing will range from $5.49 to $6.99.
In a press release, Alan Willner vice president of marketing commented, “We’re taking the legendary brand Hoyo de Monterrey and moving it into the future. The new Hoyo is about keeping the brand’s rich history of Honduran craftsmanship and infusing it with new ideas, new tobacco and new packaging.”
General has also said the future new releases for the brand will be branded under the Hoyo name. According to Willner, “Small batch cigars, collaborations and other exciting special projects are all possibilities under the new Hoyo.”
