Agile Cigar Reviews replace what we termed “Assessment Updates”. The concept is the same, but the name is different. Agile Cigar Reviews use a lightweight, shorter format. These will never take the place of our comprehensive reviews. They are only used on blends we have previously assessed. This might be a blend we are re-scoring or providing a score for a first time. It might be a blend we are looking at in a different size. Today we look at the Avo Syncro Nicaragua Fogata in the Robusto size. This is a cigar we most recently assessed in the Short Torpedo size back in October, 2016.

Avo Syncro Nicaragua Fogata Robusto

Wrapper: Habano 2000 Clara (Ecuador)
Binder: Negro San Andreas (Mexico)
Filler: Esteli Ligero (Nicaragua). Condega Visus (Nicaragua), Yamasa Visus, Piloto and San Vicente Ligero (Dominican Republic)
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic (Occidental Kelner)
Robusto: 5 x 50

The Avo Syncro Nicaragua Fogata is the second line released under the Avo Syncro Nicaragua umbrella. Early in 2015, the Avo brand under Davidoff underwent a restructuring. Later that year, the first Avo Syncro Nicaragua was unveiled – the first regular production Avo line to be box-pressed and incorporate Nicaraguan tobacco. With this new release under the Syncro line, the Avo Syncro Nicaragua Fogata brings a completely new Nicaraguan-centric blend in a rounded format.

The Fogata consists of a Ecuadorian Habano 2000 Clara wrapper over a San Andres binder. The fillers are a mix of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco. While the original box-pressed Avo Syncro Nicaragua focused around Ometepe tobacco from Nicaragua, the Fogata focuses on tobacco from Nicaragua’s Esteli and Condega regions. One other note is that the high priming ligeros for this blend are from the Dominican Republic. The Fogata is available in four sizes and today we will focus on the 5 x 50 Robusto size.

Flavor-wise, the Avo Syncro Nicaragua Fogata Robusto delivered a mix of chocolate, cedar, mineral, and some grassy notes. During the first third of the smoking experience, I found the chocolate notes to be prominent. As the cigar experienced progressed, the cedar and mineral notes became more prominent. During the last third of the smoking experience, there was more in the way of cedar spice and mineral notes.

Overall I found the Fogata Robusto to be a satisfying smoke. It’s a very different smoke than the original box-pressed Avo Syncro Nicaragua.  The Fogata Robusto is a smoke I could recommend to either a novice or experienced cigar enthusiast. While I still give a slight edge to the Short Torpedo, the Robusto size is one I would also smoke again – and it’s worthy of a picking up a fiver for your humidor.
