#16: La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva

The selection for #16 Cigar on our Cigar of the Year Countdown is the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva. This is a blend modification to the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor which was our #11 Cigar for 2010. The big change is the Mexican wrapper on the Mi Amor Reserva uses a higher priming than the original Mi Amor. Some can argue this is the Reserva has the same blend profile as the Mi Amor, but the priming changes and blend tweaks help qualify this as a new blend in our book.

The La Aroma de Cuba Reserva marks the second time in three years an Ashton cigar has qualified for the countdown.  This cigar is made at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua and it becomes the fifth cigar from this factory to make our countdown.  This also becomes the second Mexican wrapper to make this year’s countdown – joining the (#26 rated) Nestor Miranda Special Selection Danno 2012 which also came out the My Father Cigars factory.

The flavor profile is amazing providing the traditional Garcia family pepper blast as well as notes of cherry, chocolate, pepper, nut, and leather.  Perhaps the most interesting flavor note is a sweet syrup that emerges midway through the cigar experience. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. The strength is medium to full – providing just enough pop to this cigar experience. The construction is outstanding and has an excellent burn and draw.
