#18: El Primer Mundo Clase Reserva

The El Primer Mundo Clase Reserva is our #18 Cigar in the 2012 Cigar of the Year countdown.  This limited edition cigar was released by Primer Mundo Cigars.  Primer Mundo cigars is run by Sean Williams and he is definitely becoming one of the rising stars in the cigar business.  Williams has been collaborating with some of the best cigar factories in the business to produce his blends.  For the Clase Reserva, Williams turns back to El Titan de Bronze in Miami.  The cigars produced for Primer Mundo at this factory are known as the “Little Havana” series.  The Clase Reserva is the third cigar in this series.  The result is simply an outstanding cigar and one that might have flown under many cigar enthusiasts’ radars.

The Clase Reserva marks the first time Primer Mundo Cigars has landed on our countdown.  Primer Mundo becomes the fourth company making its first appearance on our Cigar of the Year countdown – joining Nat Sherman, La Flor Dominicana, and CLE.  The Clase Reserva also uses a San Andres wrapper.  In this year where San Andres wrappers have been the rage – this marks the second time on this year’s countdown a wrapper from this region has been used (the other being the Nestor Miranda Special Selection Danno 2012).

The San Andres wrapper also marks the first time Williams has used a Mexican wrapper on his blends. While we’ve been critical of the San Andres wrapper in terms of limiting the complexity of the flavor profile, there is no such case with the Clase Reserva.  This is an absolute full-bodied flavor bomb providing notes of coffee, wood, dried fruit, pepper, milk chocolate, caramel, and even hickory.  The strength falls into the medium range.  This cigar emphasizes flavor over strength.  The burn and draw of this cigar are outstanding – making for a total cigar experience.
