The Cigar of the Year Countdown is a quantitative analysis of the best cigars of 2016. Other than the fact the cigar must be a box worthy cigar to qualify for the list, when it comes to price that is not factored into the Countdown. In this exercise, I take a look at the list from a value standpoint and see how the Top 30 would look.

The concept for the Value Ranking is simple – apply an equal weight for how the cigar rank versus how the price for the cigar was ranked. The rank part was already completed as a part of the Countdown. To look at how the price was ranked, the Top 30 list was simply sorted by pricing.

Points were then assigned for each of the two lists. 30 points for the top ranked cigar, 29 points for the second ranked cigar, etc. – all the way to 1 point for the 30th cigar. Points were then applied to the pricing. 30 points for the lowest priced cigar, 29 points for the 2nd lowest priced cigar, etc – all the way down to 1 point for the most expensive cigar on the list. The points were then added up. The cigar with the most points. If cigars were tied in price, the points were distributed evenly (thus the half points)

In the final rankings, if a cigar was tied with the same amount of points, the tiebreaker went to the lower priced cigar.

Perhaps an interesting thing is that our #1 and #2 cigars also ranked very high in terms of being lower priced, thus both ended up still topping the rankings. In the end the Aladino Elegante coming in second in the rank and third lowest in price ended up topping the value rankings.
