2015_Year_in_Review

Performance Rankings are our simple method statistical analysis of the numerical scores for all cigars assessed on Cigar Coop during the previous cigar year. We have expanded this to four categories including: Brand, Country of Origin, Single Shop Exclusives, and Vitolas. Today we take a look at the vitolas.

For 2016, a total of 243 (down from 247 in 2015) cigars were considered for this analysis. We used the following criteria to implement this:

  1. The cigar must have its scored published during the 2015 Cigar Coop Cigar Year that ran from November 27, 2015 to November 24, 2016.
  2. All cigars scored were eligible regardless of release date. The goal here is to see how a vitola performed during the Cigar Coop Cigar Year.
  3. For this analysis, sampling Data was broken up into three sets: Small (5 Cigars or Less), Medium (6 to 20 Cigars), Large (Greater than 20 Cigars)
  4. Robusto and Toro was split into Robusto Grande and Toro Grande respectively- with the Grande size having a 54 to 56 greater ring gauge.
  5. Gordos had 58 and 60 ring gauge. Super Gordos were 62 ring gauge and above.
  6. Samples where the size was a one-off (i.e. unusual vitola, other unique size) were lumped into a specific category (Other).
  7. Regardless of ring gauge or length, all sizes of Torpedo, Perfecto, Salomon, Gordo, and Super Gordo were each put into a single category.
  8. Box Pressed cigars were not separated out and were included with the rounded vitolas.

Assessing the Results

  1. The overall average for the 243 cigars was 90.80
  2. In terms of the large sampling sets, Toro Grande led the way with 91.34. Robusto and Toro were just about statistically even with an average of 90.83 and 90.82 respectively. No surprise that both of these vitolas were very close to the 90.80 overall average given they had a larger sampling set.
  3. Lanceros were quite strong this year. Given two 95 scores for the #1 and #2 cigars of Crux du Connoisseur No. 2 and Aladino Elegante, this vitola ended up leading the pack of the medium sampling set with 91.60.
  4. Gordos scored much better this year. This year Gordos averaged 90.67 as opposed to 89.56. The sampling set for both years was identical with nine cigars smoked.
  5. The Petite Lancero numbers were highly influenced by the ten Tatuaje Skinny Monsters blends.
  6. The Smaller Sampling Set was included more for reference. The sample set is too small to make any significant trend conclusions
