Operation Choke Point, a controversial initiative started under the Obama Administration that denied financial services to businesses it deemed “high risk” has ended. We have the details here.

Feature of the Week: Decision on Motion by Six Health Organizations to Intervene as Defendants on Industry Lawsuit Deferred

A U.S. district court has ruled that it will defer a decision on a motion filed by six health organizations to Intervene as Defendants in FDA Lawsuit filed by the CAA, CRA, and IPCPR until September 4th. This follows recent activity where the trade associations opposed such a move while the FDA took a neutral stance.

Legislative News

  • House of Representatives: H.R. 564 is a proposed piece of legislation that calls for an exemption from FDA Regulation for premium handmade cigars. This week one new co-sponsor, Robert Brady [D-Pennsylvania], was added. The total number of sponsors is now 122.
  • U.S. SenateS.294 is the Senate companion bill to H.R. 564.This week no new co-sponsors were added. The total number of sponsors remains at 16.
  • House Bill 1136: H.R. 1136 is the legislation to change the Grandfather Date for Deeming Tobacco products subject to FDA Regulation from February 15, 2017, to 21 days after enactment of the regulations. This week no new co-sponsors were added. The total number of sponsors remains at 86.

This week, we welcomed on Episode 17 Kevin Schweitzer, Rock-A-Feller Cigars. In our Debonaire Ideal segment, we did something called “Debonaire Deliberation”. In our regular Deliberation Segment, we discussed the Boutique Cigar industry forming an association.
