Assessment Updates will be posted on this web-site to: 1) Assess “pre-review” cigars that were not given a rating or score (typically pre-release cigars); 2) Provide numeric ratings to cigars previously assessed prior to the implementation of the numeric scoring system; 3) Provide a re-assessment and re-score of previously assessed/score cigars. Today, we provide a numerical score to the La Flor Dominicana Oro Maduro. This was a cigar we were fortunate enough to smoke a pre-release sample of back in August 2012.
|La Flor Dominicana Oro Maduro|
The La Flor Dominicana Oro line pays homage to La Flor Dominicana founder Litto Gomez’s roots in the jewelry industry. As part of the marketing and packaging of these cigars, the Oro cigars are contained in gold tubing. The Oro line was launched with both a natural and maduro wrapper option. This assessment update focuses on the La Flor Dominicana Oro Maduro option. This was one of the best cigars we smoked at the 2012 IPCPR Trade Show in Orlando, Florida.
The LFD Oro line uses a Nicaraguan wrapper over Dominican binder and filler. The Nicaraguan wrapper is similar to what is used on the Coronado blend, but with a higher priming. For the Oro Maduro, the wrapper is put through a maduro curing process. The Oro Maduro is currently only available in a single vitola – a 6 x 54 Toro. The Oro Natural is offered in both a 6 x 54 Toro and 6 x 54 Chisel vitola.
The LFD Oro Maduro provides an highly complex flavor profile loaded with lots of flavor transitions. The flavor profile consists of coffee, dried fruit, leather, cream, citrus, and chocolate. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. While the strength mellowed slightly from the pre-release sample smoke, this cigar is still a full strength smoke. By the midway point, one is sure to feel a buzz from this strength. The nice part is the strength and body balance without either attribute overshadowing the other. Construction is outstanding – it is one of the best constructed cigars I’ve seen from La Flor Dominicana.
