Today we look at the Vega Magna Toro by Quesada Cigars. This is a cigar blend previously assessed back in February 2019.

In 2018, Quesada Cigars would release one of its most premium lines to date, Vega Magna. Vega Magna is a blend that was developed by Quesada Cigars’ production manager Miguel “Miguelin” Núñez and the Quesada family. The blend contains Dominican tobaccos which are aged in tercios – which is a technique that involves using the bark of palm trees to wrap the bales of tobacco. This is a technique that the Quesadas have used before – most recently in the Quesada Reserva Privada lines. Some of the tobaccos that have been used go back to 2001. In addition, the Vega Magna is finished off with some unique packaging. Today we take a look at the Vega Magna in the Toro size.

The Vega Magna blend utilizes Dominican tobaccos for both the binder and filler. In addition to the Dominican tobaccos aged in tercios, the Vega Magna is finished with a sun-grown wrapper from Ecuador. The Toro size measures 6 x 50. The cigars are presented in ten-count boxes. Each box will contain one of a series of keepsake sketches by Dominican artist Pragmy Marchial. The sketches slide out from the bottom of the box.

The Vega Magna Toro opened up with notes of natural tobacco, wood, earth, and apricot sweetness. The natural tobacco moved to the forefront. Meanwhile, the retro-hale had a woody component to it. Later in the first third some mixed pepper emerged on the tongue. Toward the second half, there was an increase in both the pepper and apricoty flavors. The final third still saw the natural tobacco flavors remain grounded in the forefront. The pepper and apricot were more prominent secondary notes, while the wood and earth were more distant.

The Vega Magna Toros used for this assessment were procured back in 2019. Since then, there has been some mellowing. This is a cigar that started with mild to medium strength and body before progressing to medium strength and body in the second half. This cigar had an excellent burn that required minimal touchups. It also had an ideal draw that had a touch of resistance to it.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Final Thoughts

While with aging the Vega Magna did lose a bit in the way of boldness, the cigar still delivered a very enjoyable experience. It’s one of the underrated blends in the Quesada portfolio, and it’s certainly one that lives up to being an ultra-premium cigar. While it wasn’t overly complex, the flavors delivered were still excellent and kept me interested from start to finish. This blend has floated under the radar – and if you can find it, it’s definitely worth getting. It’s a cigar that I would recommend to any cigar enthusiast. It certainly garners box-worthy consideration. Coming in at 91 points, this exceeds the threshold for the Cigar Coop Standard of Excellence.
