In 1886, Sanchez y Haya rolled the first cigar in Tampa, Florida. This year, Tampa-based J.C. Newman Cigar Company is paying homage to the 137th anniversary of that milestone by recreating the Sanchez y Haya brand.

Sanchez y Haya was founded by Serafin Sanchez and Ignacio Haya. They opened what would be designated as “Factory No. 1” in Tampa, barely ahead of the opening of the factory of Vincente Martinez Ybor (namesake of the Ybor City district of Tampa, Florida which became known as “Cigar City”).

J.C. Newman’s Sanchez y Haya will be offered in a Sumatra Sungrown or Oscuro Maduro wrapper option. Each cigar is blended using an undisclosed Cuban-seed binder and filler tobaccos. Both blends will be packaged in the same box and offered in one size – a 4 1/2 x 50 Short Robusto. The Short Robusto pays homage to the smaller cigars of over a century ago. Pricing is set at $8.00 per cigar for both blends.

Packaging-wise the J.C. Newman Sanchez y Haya will feature bands and a vintage-style box that is reminiscent of the original Sanchez y Haya release.

A launch event for the J.C. Newman Sanchez y Haya was held April 13, 2023 at Hotel Haya in Ybor City. Hotel Haya is the location of the original Sanchez y Haya cigar factory. The cigars themselves will be sold exclusively in Tampa – including at Hotel Haya, the J.C. Newman Factory Store at the El Reloj Cigar Factory, and other premium cigar retailers in Tampa.
