General Cigar has announced the launch of two new collections under its Hoyo de Monterrey brand, Hoyo de Monterrey Oscuro and Hoyo de Monterrey Rojo. Both lines pay homage to the 1960s when Hoyo de Monterrey started being produced in Honduras. According to General Cigar, these lines bring a new beginning for what is a storied brand.
In a press release, Senior Brand Manager Ed Lahmann said, “The launch of these blends represents more than just new cigars. They are about honoring the brand’s deep-seated foundation in Honduras. As one of the first Cuban ex-pat brands available in the US, Hoyo de Monterrey laid the foundation for Honduran cigarmaking nearly 60 years ago and has become a living legend in the world of premium cigars. With the launch of ‘Rojo’ and ‘Oscuro,’ the brand’s journey is reflected in its commitment to balancing traditional Honduran craftsmanship against the handmade cigar category’s ever-changing tides.”
Both the Oscuro and Rojo lines come out of STG’s HATSA factory in Danlí, Honduras. Hoyo de Monterrey Oscuro features a Brazilian Mata Fina Oscuro wrapper—a first for Hoyo de Monterrey. The remainder of the blend incorporates an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder and filler comprised of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan tobacco. According to General Cigar, the cigar delivers a medium-plus experience.
Hoyo de Monterrey Rojo uses a Honduran Jamastran wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and filler tobaccos from Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. According to General Cigar, the cigar delivers a medium-bodied smoking experience.
Presented in ten-count boxes, both blends come in the same three sizes with identical price points: Rothschild, Toro, and Gigante. Pricing for both the Oscuro and Rojo ranges from $5.99 to $8.49.
The Hoyo Oscuro and Rojo are shipping to retailers the first week in June.
