Bojangles Bo Bites

Today, we are reviewing Bojangles’ Bo Bites. Bo Bites are Bojangles’ entry into the chicken nugget market. Bojangles regularly offers Chicken Supremes, which are chicken tenders. Bo Bites are a smaller bite-sized chicken offering. While they are smaller than a Chicken Supremes tender, they are designed to be bigger than the chicken nuggets they compete against. Bo Bites are covered with Bojangles’ signature handbreading. Bojangles is running this as a limited menu option from just before Halloween and plans to conclude it on December 29, 2024.

Bojangles was founded in 1977 in Charlotte, North Carolina, by Jack Fulk and Richard Thomas. As of 2023, it has 818 restaurants. While it operates franchises in 17 states and Honduras, it is still a regional chain serving the southeastern United States, especially North Carolina.

The Construction

Bojangles offers a dipping sauce with Bo Bites. One of the recommended dipping sauces was Peach Honey Pepper – which was selected for the review. Each Bo Bite was dipped into the sauce as a part of the review.

The Experience

The following scoring was used for this assessment:

  • Chicken: 5 points
  • Hand Breading: 2 points
  • Dipping Sauce: 1 point
  • Intangibles: 2 points

Chicken

The most crucial ingredient in a chicken nugget or tender is the chicken. One impressive thing about the chicken on the Bo Bites is that it was all white meat. The meat was mostly tender and not dry, and there wasn’t a lot of grease. From a flavor perspective, it was also quite satisfying. Overall, this meat was better than I’ve seen on a chicken nugget.

Score: 3.25 out of 5 points

Hand Breading

Bojangles is known for its chicken breading, which contains Bojangles Signature Southern Seasoning. This seasoning combines paprika, pepper, and other assorted spices. The seasoning on the Bo Bites is very subtle. It provides a slight kick without being spicy. If you prefer mild to medium flavors, the Bo Bites seasonings will suit your taste. The breading itself was crispy and not very oily.

Score: 1.50 out of 2 points

Dipping Sauce

This differs slightly from other food reviews in that I kept the sauce separate but still scored it.  When selecting a sauce, both Bojangles and a good friend of mine recommended the Peach Honey Pepper option. I admit I was gun-shy on this, but took their advice.

The sauce tastes precisely as advertised—a combination of peach, honey, and pepper. The peach and honey provide sweetness, the pepper adds some zip, and the honey adds texture. Each nugget was lightly dunked into the sauce, which seemed to be the right approach. The sauce complemented both the chicken and the breading quite well.

Intangibles

Probably the most essential intangible is that the overall experience exceeds the sum of its parts. This is a key point of the Bojangles Bo Bites with the Peach Honey Pepper sauce. The dipping will take this to the next level. The breaded chicken itself brings a slight spice to the meat experience. Dunking the Bo Bites adds a little more zip and some sweetness.

I chose the 12-piece option. The size of the nugget and the amount of breading and sauce will make the nine-piece size more than satisfactory for filling you up. As you can see from the chart below, the cost per Bo Bite decreases as you place a larger order. In my opinion, the 12-piece option is the way to go. If you can’t eat them all in one sitting, this choice allows you to share some of the Bo Bites or save them for later.

Quantity/Price Price per Bo Bite
4 Piece ($3.99) $1.00
6 Piece ($4.99) $0.83
9 Piece ($6.99) $0.78
12 Piece ($8.49) $0.71

A couple of areas of improvement: First, There is a lot of breading on the Bo Bites – probably a little too much. For some reason, it works on bone-in chicken parts for me but less so on a chicken nugget. Second, the Bo Bites are packaged in a Bojangles yellow box. It seemed a little weak to hold all the chicken and sauce.

Score: 1.25 out of 2.00 points

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Bojangles succeeded with its Bo Bites by staying true to its roots. Importantly, the brand didn’t try to reinvent the wheel; it used flavorful white chicken and traditional breading. While some people might prefer a spicier chicken option, I found this one to be excellent.

Going into this review, if you had asked me if a chicken nugget could score 7 out of 10 points, I would have said there was no chance of that happening. However, the 7 points are well deserved and reflective of the experience with the Bo Bites. If you are reading this on the publishing date (December 27), you have a couple of more days to get Bo Bites.

Another thing to note is that the sauce contributes to the experience. This review is based on Peach Honey Pepper and might have scored differently with another sauce option.

To see any chicken nugget score 7 out of 10 points has me in complete shock. I’m not a chicken nugget guy, but I still very much enjoyed the Bo Bites. I believe this limited option needs to come back – at least as an annual release.
