Padron 60th Anniversary Maduro
Padrón 60th Anniversary Maduro

Today, we review the Padrón 60th Anniversary Maduro.  The 60th made its debut at the 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Officially, Padrón Cigars celebrated its anniversary on September 8, 2024, so a small allocation was released in time for that date before a wider release circulated later in 2025. Three things that stood out about this release are: 1) The gold-colored coffins – a Padrón first; 2) A new perfecto size for Padrón (first since the Padrón 80th); and 3) the use of the throwback style Padrón bands. The 60th Anniversary is also one of the most premium Padrón Cigars with a current price point of $75.00 SRP/cigar.  As with most Padrón cigars, the 60th Anniversary is available in two blends: Natural and Maduro. Several weeks ago, we assessed the 60th Anniversary Natural. Now we turn our attention to the Maduro.

Padrón is known for creating cigars to honor two milestones: 1964 and 1926. 1964 is the year Padrón Cigars was founded, while 1926 is the year the patriarch, José Orlando Padrón, was born. Padrón named a regular production line for each of those years. Additionally, Padrón has released commemorative, limited-production cigars to honor both milestones. The following is a list of limited-production cigars commemorating the company’s anniversary. Each of these cigars is available in both Maduro and Natural blends.

Without further ado, let’s break down the 60th Anniversary Maduro and see what this cigar brings to the table.

Padrón 60th Anniversary Maduro – Cigar Review

SPECIFICATIONS

Blend and Origin

As with all Padrón Maduro cigars, the 60th Anniversary Natural features 100% Nicaraguan-grown tobaccos.

  • Wrapper: Nicaraguan Maduro
  • Binder: Nicaraguan
  • Filler: Nicaraguan
  • Country of Origin: Nicaragua
  • Factory: Tabacos Cubanica S.A.

Vitolas Offered

Both the 60th Anniversary Maduro and Natural blends are available in a single size: a 6 1/2 x 56 rounded perfecto. Each cigar comes in an individual gold-colored coffin. The coffins are packaged in ten-count boxes.

Appearance (*)

The Nicaraguan wrapper of the 60th Anniversary Maduro had a milk chocolate color. There were some traces of oil on the surface. The wrapper itself was slightly toothy and had a somewhat bumpy texture to it. There were a few visible veins. As for the wrapper seams, they were minimally visible.

The cigar itself had a nozzle tip with a steep taper and an open footer. Meanwhile, there was a slow, gentle taper toward the cap.

PERFORMANCE

Pre-Light Draw (*)

A straight cut was used to commence the cigar experience of the 60th Anniversary Maduro. Given that this cigar had a short taper, the cut I used removed the majority of the taper from the cigar. Once the cap was removed, it was time to commence with the pre-light draw experience. The cold draw delivered notes of chocolate and earth as well as a slight cedar note. Overall, this was a satisfactory pre-light draw experience. At this point, it was time to toast up the 60th Anniversary Maduro and head into the smoking phase.

Tasting Notes

The 60th Anniversary Maduro opened up with notes of chocolate and coffee. Notes of cedar, pepper, and orange citrus soon followed this. The chocolate and the orange citrus moved into the forefront early. Meanwhile, the coffee, cedar, and pepper settled into the background. The retro-hale saw an additional layer of the black pepper.

At the start of the second third of the 60th anniversary, Maduro saw the coffee notes join the chocolate in the forefront. The two notes fused and formed a mocha note. Meanwhile, the orange notes receded into the background, joining the cedar and pepper notes. There was a gradual increase in the pepper notes on both the tongue and the retro-hale.

The final third saw the mocha note break apart. The coffee notes remained in the forefront, while the chocolate receded into the background, accompanied by orange, pepper, and cedar notes. This final third saw a slight amount of bitterness emerge, but it didn’t become harsh. As the 60th Anniversary Maduro came to a close, the cigar finished with a soft, cool nub.

Burn

The burn performed excellently on the 60th Anniversary Maduro. This burn maintained a straight burn path and a straight burn line, requiring minimal touchups. The resulting ash had a silver-gray color. The ash wasn’t overly firm, but it wasn’t excessively loose. There was a slight amount of flaking on this ash. Meanwhile, the burn rate and burn temperature were ideal.

Draw

Usually, I like a little resistance on a draw. In the case of the 60th Anniversary Maduro, there was a little more resistance than I prefer. There was no case where the cigar was plugged or had to be relit, but this was a case where it required higher maintenance to derive flavor from.

Strength and Body

The 60th Anniversary Maduro started with medium strength and medium-bodied flavors. Both the strength and body seemed to increase in intensity linearly. By the second half, both attributes moved into medium to full territory.

In terms of strength versus body, the body maintained a slight edge from start to finish.

BANDING AND PACKAGING NOTES (*)

The packaging comments for the Maduro are identical to those I made for the natural. The only change I would have made is to denote “Maduro” or “Natural” on the coffin to make them easier to identify.

Padrón consistently excels in packaging. The 60th Anniversary edition features stunning presentation with its shiny piano finish boxes and gold coffins. Both the Natural and Maduro variants share the same box and coffin design. This can be confusing if you store both types in your personal humidor.

Padrón 60th Anniversary Box

I also like the original Padrón logo on the bands and the box. I wish they would bring this logo back full-time.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Final Thoughts

When it came to the Padrón 60th Natural vs. Maduro, the difference was essentially night and day. The Natural proved to be quite disappointing, but the Maduro was everything I have come to expect from Padrón and an anniversary cigar. This cigar hit the mark in the most critical category: flavor. The Maduro did not experience the construction issues that the Natural faced. Ultimately, the Maduro achieved an excellence rating of 90 points. More importantly, I felt that it offered something exceptional. While I wouldn’t spend extravagantly on the Natural, the Maduro was a different case and well worth the splurge.
