The Details
Coming in at #13 on the 2024 Cigar of the Year Countdown is the 601 La Bomba Warhead X by Espinosa Cigars.
One of the most popular annual limited-edition cigar series to hit the market over the past decade is the 601 La Bomba Warhead Series. This series has an excellent track record of success, landing on the Cigar Coop Countdown eight times. Warhead is an extension of the original 601 La Bomba line, but it replaces the Nicaraguan Habano wrapper with a Broadleaf wrapper. As the name suggests, it is intended to be a strong, bold cigar.
Each installment of the Warhead has featured a different size, a tweaked blend adjusted to that size, and a different set of artwork. The Warhead X is a 6 x 55 oval press vitola from the San Lotano factory. San Lotano is AJ Fernandez’s factory in Ocotal, Nicaragua. If you have followed AJ, oval-shaped box presses are a signature size of his factories. Warhead X is a Nicaraguan puro featuring all Nicaraguan tobaccos. It was blended by Espinosa’s Director of Operations, Hector Alfonso.
Warhead X delivers a bold flavor profile consisting of notes of mocha (coffee, chocolate), licorice, earth, cream, and pepper. The flavors might start out medium-bodied, but they increase throughout the whole smoking experience and become full-bodied by the end of the second third. There is plenty of punch when it comes to strength -starting out medium to full and becoming full strength in the second half.
Espinosa Cigars is the most successful company in the Countdown’s history. The company has landed 12 times with at least one cigar on the Countdown, all in 12 consecutive years. Nicaragua’s 11th cigar to land on this year’s Countdown is from that country.
