Assessment Updates will be posted on this web-site to: 1) Assess “pre-review” cigars that were not given a rating or score (typically pre-release cigars); 2) Provide numeric ratings to cigars previously assessed prior to the implementation of the numeric scoring system; 3) Provide a re-assessment and re-score of a previously assessed/score cigars. Today, we re-assess the Tatuaje Mini Mum from the original 2012 Tatuaje Little Monsters series. This was a cigar we assessed back in July, 2012.
Tatuaje Mini Mum |
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Criollo
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Mini Mum: 5 3/4 x 42
Each year since 2008, Tatuaje has had an annual release known as the Tatuaje Monsters Series. This is an annual limited edition release that has been a tribute to a character in a monster / horror movie. These cigars have typically been longer cigars and have been “one and done” releases. In 2012, Tatuaje released their Little Monsters sampler pack. This sampler consisted of smaller vitolas of the Monsters Series releases. At the time the Little Monsters was released, the Mini Mum was unique. This was because its full size counterpart – the Tatuaje Mummy had not been released yet (it was released later that year). The blend of the Mini Mum / Mummy was a Cigar Coop favorite and in 2012 it finished as the #10 Cigar of the Year.
In terms of the Mini Mum / Mummy blend, this became the first Nicaraguan puro in the series. The cigar uses a Nicaraguan Criollo wrapper – something that is found on the Tatuaje Black Label. The word is the Mini Mum / Mummy is based on the Black Label blend.
From a flavor profile standpoint, the Mini Mum delivered notes of caramel grass, pepper, and floral / baker’s spice. I found more in the way of caramel sweetness up front with more spice and grass in the second half. The caramel was reminiscent of the sweetness from the Black Label.
In comparison to the full-sized Mummy, I find the Mini Mum as a more amp’d up version of this blend. It has more in the way of spice, strength, and body. On the other hand, with nearly two years of age, I found the Mini Mum itself to be a a little more dialed back now. This is a cigar that is medium to full in both strength and body.
