Crowned Heads has announced its tenth installment to is annual Las Calaveras Series, the Las Calaveras Edicion Limitada (EL) 2023. This year, for the first time since 2016, the Las Calaveras will be highlighted by a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.
Las Calaveras was first launched in 2014 and has been an annual release. Las Calaveras pays homage to those who have passed away over the past year. As opposed to being a mournful symbol, it is intended to be a celebration of those lives and remembrances of those who are no longer with us. As with most of the previous blends, the bands of each release of Las Calaveras have contained the initials of four deceased individuals.
In addition to the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Las Calaveras EL 2023 consists of a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler – marking the first time Sumatra has been used on a Las Calaveras blend. The cigars will be released in four sizes: LC 50 (5 x 50), LC52 (6 x 52), LC54 (5 5/8 x 54), and Belicoso Fino (5 1/2 x 52). The Belicoso Fino will be available as a part of a four-count sampler featuring one of each of the Las Calaveras EL 2023 sizes. The LC46, LC52, and LC54 will be available in 24-count boxes. Production is handled by My Father Cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua – who has produced every release of Las Calaveras to date. Production has been allocated to 1,500 boxes per size and an additional 3,000 sampler boxes. Pricing ranges from $12.95 to $14.95 per cigar. The sampler is priced at $54.95.
With the 24-count boxes, the cigars are arranged in three rows of eight cigars each. The number 8 is a symbol of infinity as in everlasting life, while the three rows represent the beginning, middle, and end of the cycle of life.
“We’re bringing the Broadleaf back for ’23,” commented an excited Crowned Heads co-founder, Jon Huber in a press release. “I’ve held My Father Cigars and the Garcia family in such high regard, especially when it came to their use of Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and the resultant blend expressions. The 2023 Las Calaveras blend has so much going on in terms of what you’d expect from a My Father Broadleaf blend, everything from pepper to chocolate to earth, all impeccably and consistently balanced. We’re also featuring a first in the 2023 Las Calaveras Sampler, as this will be the first time we’ve featured a Belcoso Fino as the Sampler-exclusive vitola, and the first time we’ve produced that vitola with My Father Cigars.”
The cigar is also noted for a different color band each year. For 2023, the color selected was orange. Each year, the Las Calaveras band has been adorned with the initials of four individuals who’ve passed the prior year, one set of initials embossed upon each of the four coins on the sides of each band.
Las Calaveras EL 2023 is expected to ship to retailers in June.
The following are the releases of Las Calaveras. One significant note is that each year has highlighted a different blend and a different wrapper. The primary band color is noted in parentheses
