Flor de La Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 by My Father Cigars

In 2012, My Father Cigars would release a brand that would become one of its most successful lines from a critical acclaim and commercial standpoint. That brand was Flor de las Antillas. Translated to English, Flor de las Antillas means “Flower of the Antilles,” which pays homage to the Cuban heritage of the owners of My Father Cigars, the Garcia family. Cuba is located in the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean region and is the largest island. Cuba is also known as the ‘Flower of the Antilles.” Flor de las Antillas is a Nicaraguan puro highlighted by a Sun Grown wrapper. Since then, the brand has expanded to many sizes and has also added a Maduro-wrapped offering. In 2022,  My Father Cigars commemorated ten years of Flor de las Antillas by releasing a special limited edition cigar appropriately called Flor de las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022. This would feature an all-new blend from the original offering.  While it was planned for a 2022 release, the cigar landed at retailers at the beginning of 2023.

The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary cigar is the latest My Father brand to have a limited edition offering. Other brands from My Father getting limited-edition releases include My Father, Le Bijou, Jaime Garcia, and Don Pepin Garcia. The list below highlights the existing My Father cigar brands that have seen a special limited edition release. These releases have featured enhanced blends with exquisite packaging. Some of the cigars have been released in coffins or humidors.

In the case of the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022, the release is distributed in coffins with exquisite packaging. It’s an ultra-premium cigar priced at $40.00. More on packaging and pricing later.

Let’s break down the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 without further ado and see what this cigar brings to the table.

SPECIFICATIONS

Blend and Origin

The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 is a different blend than the original Flor de Las Antillas sun-grown. The blend incorporates all Nicaraguan tobaccos from the Garcia family farms. The wrapper on the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary is from a similar seed as the original but is a darker shade. The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary production comes from the My Father Cigars factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Factory: My Father Cigars S.A.

Vitolas Offered

The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 comes in one size – a 6 1/2 x 50 Toro. This is a vitola size that has been used on many of My Father Cigars’ limited edition cigars. Each cigar comes in a coffin, and the coffins are presented in 12-count boxes. A total of 5,000 (individually numbered) boxes were produced.

Appearance

Once removed from the coffin, the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 is a very aesthetically pleasing cigar. The wrapper had a dark caramel color to it. The surface of the wrapper had some oils on it. While there were some visible wrapper seams and veins, it didn’t take away from the elegance of this cigar’s appearance.

PERFORMANCE

Pre-Light Draw

A straight cut was used to remove the cap of the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022. Once the cap was removed, it was time to commence with the pre-light draw ritual. The cold draw was mostly a mix of earth, leather, and cedar. To me, this wasn’t the most exciting pre-light draw. Since the pre-light draw experience is not factored into the scoring and assessment ratings, there was no loss of points here. It was now time to remove the footer band of the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary, toast up the cigar, and proceed with the smoking phase.

Tasting Notes

The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 opened up with natural tobacco, herbal notes, earth, cedar, and black pepper. Early on, the natural tobacco and herbal notes moved into the forefront, with the earth, cedar, and black pepper selling in the background. The natural tobacco imparted some sweetness. When the cigar reached the midway point of the first third, some black coffee notes surfaced in the background. Meanwhile, the retro-hale produced a combination of herb and pepper notes.

During the second third of the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary, the natural tobacco and herbal notes diminished slightly but still maintained their position in the forefront. The earth, cedar, black pepper, and black coffee remained in the background. The black pepper note surfacing in the first third dissipated by midway.

The last third saw the natural tobacco and herbal notes pick up again. There was some bitterness with some harshness that emerged from the herbal notes. The earth, cedar, and black pepper remained in the background. This is the way the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary came to a close. The resulting nub was soft to the touch and cool in temperature.

Burn

Overall, the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 scored nicely when it came to burn. The cigar maintained a relatively straight burn path and had a straight burn line. This was a cigar that did not require frequent touch-ups. The resulting ash had a light gray color with some random dark streaks mixed in.

Draw

The draw to the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022  was spot-on. It had a touch of resistance -which is something that I like. At the same time, this was a low-maintenance cigar to derive flavor from.

Strength and Body

The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022  started as a medium-strength, medium-bodied cigar.  There was a slight increase in the intensity of both attributes, but the strength and body stayed in the medium range for the duration of the cigar. While both characteristics were in the medium range, the body maintained an edge over the strength.

BANDING AND PACKAGING NOTES

The primary band for the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 was similar to the original Flor de Las Antillas. Still, it was slightly different in that it was selected longer to include the text “10th Anniversary”. The 10th Anniversary version also has a footer band referencing the 10th anniversary.

As mentioned, the Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary is an ultra-premium offering, and the packaging is quite exquisite. I liked the plate on the box that told what number box this is. The Garcia family is at the top of their game regarding ultra-premium releases. The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022  is no exception.

   OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Final Thoughts

The Flor de Las Antillas 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2022 is a cigar that I had high expectations for.  The exquisite packaging also had me equally excited. While the packaging was excellent, and the cigar itself had superior construction, unfortunately, this cigar fell down in the most important category – flavor. Nothing really reminded me of the current regular production Flor de Las Antillas offering. The herbal notes I detected did not make for a good flavor profile, and the bitterness and harshness at the end made for a rough finish for this cigar. Given the $40.00 price point, it was simply too high a price tag to give this cigar a recommendation.
