My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary

My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary

For the past six years, My Father Cigars has released a series of one and done limited edition cigars. These cigars have typically been based around existing My Father Cigar brands and have ranked among some of the My Father’s most ultra-premium releases. The cigars in the My Father Limited Edition series have had two common characteristics that set them apart from standard My Father brand releases: First, each cigar is a 6 1/2 x 52 Toro; and 2) Secondly, these releases have incorporated rare Pelo de Oro tobacco. Today we take a look at one of the installments, the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary. As the name indicates the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary commemorates five years since the first My Father Limited Edition was released. Overall I found this to be an solid installment in the My Father Limited Edition series – and one that has responded quite well to age.

The My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary marked the first installment of the series to be released since 2013’s Don Pepin Garcia 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 2013. It also was the first limited edition release branded with the My Father name since the My Father Limited Edition 2012. Finally, this was the third coffin release of the series (recently, the release of the Limited Edition 2015, the My Father Le Bijou 1922 Limited Edition 2016 became the fourth coffin release).

Without further ado, let’s take a closer look at the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary and see what this cigar brings to the table

Blend Profile and Vitolas Available

The My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary uses a wrapper the company called “Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro”. In addition the cigar features all Nicaraguan tobaccos for the remainder of the blend including a double under of Corojo 2006 and Habano tobacco. A total of 4,200 boxes of 14 were produced for the Limited Edition 2015. 4,000 of these boxes were allocated for the U.S. market. The remaining cigars were made available to the international market.

As mentioned the blend incorporates Pelo de Oro. Pelo de Oro is a tobacco that is often only available in limited quantities. This is because Pelo de Oro is susceptible to blue mold and other diseases. As a result, it produces low yields.

Appearance

The Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro wrapper of the My Father Limited Edition 2015 has a dark caramel color with a slight cinnamon tint to it. Upon closer examination, there is some subtle marbling on the surface. The wrapper itself has a moderate amount of oil and is on the smooth side. Any visible veins were on the thin side and most of the wrapper seams were well hidden.

There are two bands on the My Father Limited Edition 2015. The primary band is the classic peach/pink, green, gold, and white My Father Cigars band found across the the line.

The secondary band sits below the main band. At the center of the band, on a gold background is the text “Limited Edition” in red cursive font. Below that text is “By Master Blender J. Garcia” in black cursive font. There are three gold ribbon designs toward the bottom of that band. The center ribbon is slightly below the other two. On each ribbon (from left to right) is the text “HAND”, “ESTELI, NICARAGUA”, and “MADE” respectively – all in black front. To the left side of the secondary band has an orange background with pale yellow “MF” logos in wallpaper mode. There are also four more prominent red “MF” logos on the band . To the right it says “My Father Cigars” with the signatures of master blenders Don Pepin Garcia and Jaime Garcia all in gold font – also on an orange background with pale yellow “MF” logos. Finally the band also has some gold, red, and white accents on it.

A orange ribbon surrounds the footer of the My Father Limited Edition 2015.

Preparation for the Cigar Experience

Prior to lighting up the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary, I went with my usual choice of a straight cut to remove the cap. After clipping the cap, I moved on to the pre-light draw. The cold draw delivered a mix or orange spice, cedar, and natural tobacco. Overall I considered this to be a very good pre-light daw. At this point I removed the ribbon of the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary, lit up the cigar and awaited what the smoking phase would have in store.

Flavor Profile

A potpourri of flavors surfaced at the start of the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary. This included notes of black pepper, orange, cocoa, and caramel. Early on, the orange and caramel notes moved into the forefront delivering a nice amount of sweetness. The cocoa shifted into the background. While the black pepper also receded into the background, I found it prominent on the retro-hale.

During the first third, the orange and caramel notes remained primary. The cocoa and black pepper notes still remained in the background and were joined by a baker’s spice. The baker’s spice also joined the black pepper on the retro-hale.

As the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary moved through the second third, the baker’s spice increased and joined the orange notes in the forefront. Meanwhile the caramel diminished joining the cocoa and black pepper notes.

Toward the later part of the second third, a natural tobacco note surfaced joining the baker’s spice in the forefront. The orange notes diminished and joined the cocoa and pepper in the background. By this point the pepper notes were increasing and the caramel notes were now the ones in the distant background.

The last third saw the natural tobacco and baker’s spice as the primary notes. The pepper was now a close secondary note with the orange and cocoa receding into the distant background. This is the way the cigar experience of the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary came to a close. The resulting nub was firm to the touch and cool in temperature.

Burn and Draw

Overall the burn performed very well on the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary. The cigar maintained a straight burn path and a relatively straight burn line from start to finish. The cigar didn’t require an abnormal amount of touch-ups along the way. The resulting ash near white in color. This ash was quite firm coming off the cigar in relatively clean chunks. The burn rate and burn temperature were both ideal.

The draw performed quite well on the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary. It had a touch of resistance to it which is something I like. At the same time, this was a low maintenance cigar to derive flavor from.

Strength and Body

In terms of strength, the My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary started out dead medium. I found the strength increased linearly throughout the smoking experience. By the midway point, the strength moved into medium to full territory. While the strength increased in the second half, the cigar did not get out of medium to full territory.

The body took a similar path as the strength. The My Father Limited Edition 2015 5th Anniversary started out medium to full-bodied. There also was a linear increase in body and by the second half this was a full-bodied cigar.

When looking at strength versus body, I felt the body had the edge throughout the smoking experience.

Final Thoughts

When the My Father Limited Edition 2015 first hit the stores last year, I thought this was a cigar that could use some rest in the humidor. Now with a little over a year of age on this cigar, this cigar has improved. I found that this was a complex cigar with a lot of flavor transitions and nuances. This is a cigar that delivers plenty of sweetness. While there was some complexity with the sweetness, I still felt there was too much sweetness on this cigar. I definitely would have liked to see it dialed back slightly.

At the same time while I don’t think this cigar was as good as many of its predecessors in the line, it still is a very good cigar. Given its fuller, this is a cigar I would probably steer toward a more experienced cigar enthusiast. As for myself, this is worthy of a box split.
