Feature of the Week: Tom Price Resigns as Secretary of Health and Human Services
Amid an investigation of using charter and military flights to conduct business, Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price has resigned. Health and Human Services is the department which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) falls under. With the cigar industry facing the impacts of the FDA Deeming Regulations, the industry was looking for someone who was considered “friendly” toward the cigar industry – and that’s exactly what they got with Price. Legislative News
- State Department: The agency has issued a warning urging to not travel to Cuba. In addition, it is significantly reducing the staff at the U.S. Embassy.
- House of Representatives: H.R. 564 is a proposed piece of legislation that calls for an exemption from FDA Regulation for premium handmade cigars. This week Val Demings [D-Florida] was added as a co-sponsor. The total number of sponsors is now 124.
- U.S. Senate: S.294 is the Senate companion bill to H.R. 564.This week one new co-sponsor, Sen Pat Toomey [D-Pennsylvania] was added as a co-sponsor. The total number of sponsors is now 18.
- House Bill 1136: H.R. 1136 is the legislation to change the Grandfather Date for Deeming Tobacco products subject to FDA Regulation from February 15, 2017, to 21 days after enactment of the regulations. This week no new co-sponsors were added. The total number of sponsors remains 87.
- FDA: This week the agency officially announced increased tobacco product user fees for Fiscal Year 2018. In addition, the deadline for product and establishment registration for domestic manufacturers has been extended to October 12, 2017.
